September 14-24, 2008:  Egypt

After settling into a new home and new job last year, it was time to fulfill a lifelong dream and visit the Land of the Pharoahs--Egypt.

I could think of no other person better suited to join me than my best buddy from Canada, Lee Rumohr.  Lee shares my passion for traveling and quickly jumped at the chance to cruise the Nile, explore the tombs in the Valley of the Kings, crawl through the cramped interior of the Great Pyramid at Giza, and take a camel ride through the desert.

The pyramid of Khafre, with its outer casing on top.

The pyramid of Khufu is the largest of all the pyramids.

It is 450 feet
tall.

Khafre.

The pyramid of Khafre still has some of its limestone casing intact.

Squeezing through the low passageway inside the Khafre pyramid.

Bargaining for a bottle of Pepsi.

Which Lee sucked down pretty quickly!

We explored the inside of both of the large pyramids.

Pictures weren’t allowed inside, so we took plenty outside.

Camels were all over the place.

The Great Pyramid.

The foot of Khafre with Cairo in the distance.

The entrance to Khafre.  When we got to the inside, we joined others in some chanting!

The Giza Plateau is largely desert.

The Sphinx, with The Pyramid of Khafre in the background.

Posing in front of the Sphinx.

The Sphinx has the body of a lion and the face of a man.

The Great Pyramid.

Egypt’s earliest colossal royal statue.

A symbol of royal power.

Carved from an outcrop of rock on the Giza Plateau.

Much of the statue has been restored.

Supposedly the face of Khafre.

The Great Pyramid.

Camels are the best way to get around here.

The lion’s tail.

The Khafre Pyramid was completely encased in limestone at one time..

The desert beckons.

The camel rental place!

Quite the choice of models.

Cara gets herself situated.

Everyone selects a beast.

I’m ready to go!

Lee’s camel gets to its feet.

And takes off down the street.

Through the streets of Giza.

And out into the desert.

It wasn’t as hard as I thought, but it was uncomfortable, for sure.

Heading to the pyramids.

Desert all around, but it was still beautiful.

Approaching the pyramids.

Our caravan.

Stopping to admire the view!

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo held all the best treasures.

Sun setting on our last night in Egypt.

The Great Pyramid.

The sound and light show.

It was kind of cheesy.

What would the pharaohs have thought of this?

Still...it was gorgeous.

The pyramids at night.

Definitely a sight to see.

Our hotel in
Cairo.

Rosie!

The Swiss Inn Pyramids Resort.

Lee’s had enough fun...time to go home.
