October 16, 2009  It’s always a great day when a friend and fellow writer releases a new book.  Such was the case when one of the finest people I know, Laura Resau, recently had a launch party for her new novel, The Indigo Notebook.  I drove up to Ft. Collins with my buddy, Kirk Farber, where we met my writing partner, Brandon Meyers, and joined other friends and family for a wonderful time.

AuthorFest of the Rockies is always one of my favorite events of the year.  Once again, I got to spend time at Manitou High School with the kids, hang out with friends and other authors, and learn more about the craft of writing!

While Jaguar Night is being shopped to publishers, my new manuscript, Gaap (which I’m collaborating on with my buddy Brandon), was a big hit at this year’s open mic reading.  Spooky stuff.

Below are a couple of snaps from the event at the Cliff House Hotel.  Take a look and join us next year!

NOTE:  Pictures pop up in separate windows.

The hilarious and amazing students of Mrs. Wecks’s 2nd block English class!

At the huge author signing with my new friend, Colorado poet Sandra Dorr.

My buddy Jake Landals got a kick out of meeting
ten-year-old bestselling author Alec Greven.

Good friend and fellow-author Kirk Farber talked to a packed house about his new novel, Postcards from a Dead Girl.

My buddy, Bob Spiller, and I  taught a class this week on How to Write a Teen Novel.

It was part of the Pikes Peak Writers’ Summer Program, and it sure was a lot of fun!

We invited several local teens to join us in giving tips, tricks, and some unique insight to aspiring YA authors!

With Jaguar Night finished and being shopped to publishers, I’m in search of a new project.  My writer buddy, Brandon Meyers, and I headed up to the high country yesterday to talk about some ideas and discuss the details of a neat collaboration.  More on that soon.  In the meantime, Colorado looked as good as ever.  We snapped plenty of pics, which you can see here!

It sure has been a busy Spring!  Not only have I been putting the finishing touches on what I hope will be the final revision of the
long-overdue Border Patrol, but I also finished the latest draft of Jaguar Night.  To celebrate, I headed off to Ireland for the Memorial Day weekend with my sister Kelly, her husband Jim, and my son Gabriel.  Take a look here!

One of the best parts of being an author is sharing in the great success of other writers.  I’ve been blessed this year to attend many wonderful events featuring authors I admire and consider friends.

I realize it’s been a while since I’ve posted any book news here.  My agent, Caryn Wiseman, has been diligently working on securing a contract for Border Patrol.  Two major New York houses are interested, so we’re just weighing our options.  I should have an official announcement very soon.  In the meantime, the second draft of Jaguar Night is nearly complete.  I believe it’s the best work I’ve done so far.  Look for more information on that soon...

This morning, I had the honor and privilege of spending some time over at Manitou Springs High School and meeting with the students of Mrs. Martens’s Senior English class.

Most of the kids have read the book and were generous with their questions and praise.  As an author, it’s always nice to get some face-time with your target audience and hear their comments and suggestions.

While there, I was interviewed briefly on the school radio station, 103.3 FM.  The talented young man running the show was great and put me right at ease.  Thanks, MSHS!!

This year, I had the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving in Santa Fe, New Mexico, visiting friends and seeing some of the sites.

Gabi and I were last there in 1995, so it’s been a while.  It was good to return to one of America’s most beautiful cities.  See some pics here!

I went up to the Tattered Cover Bookstore in Denver last night to see and hear a true master of children’s storytelling:  Louis Sachar.  The acclaimed author of “Holes” has won both the National Book Award and the Newberry Honor for his often hilarious tale of Camp Green Lake and Stanley Yelnats.

As an author, I find it inspiring and educational to meet and listen to other writers, to hear their stories of putting words to paper and getting published.

Fall is Colorado has never looked finer.  This picture of Pikes Peak is symbolic of the beauty we’ve experienced this year.  My October was made even better when my agent, Caryn Wiseman, read my newest manuscript, Jaguar Night, and declared it to be “really well-written and fast-paced”.  I look forward to sharing details with you soon!

Here’s a shot from this month’s wonderful Author Fest of the Rockies, held earlier in Manitou Springs.  After teaching a session on “Writing for the Reluctant Reader”, I spent some time signing books for fans with fellow authors Carol Hightshoe and Robert Spiller.  I’m already looking forward to next year’s event!

October 10, 2008
My brother’s wedding in Atlanta, Georgia, gave me a chance to visit one of the country’s most important literary landmarks:  The Margaret Mitchell House on Peachtree Street.  It was in this modest apartment that Peggy Mitchell penned her bestselling novel, Gone With the Wind.

My buddy Lee Rumohr and I just returned from an amazing trip to Egypt, where we spent more than a week cruising the Nile from Aswan to Luxor and exploring the Pyramids at Giza.

UPDATE: I’ve posted five full pages of photos from our trip in the Photos Section.  Be sure to stop by and see all the fun we had!

This Labor Day, I hit the road with my family and visited Mesa Verde National Park.

While the weather was less-than-perfect, we still managed to have a great time.

If you’ve never been there, you’ll be amazed.  Check out some of our pictures here.

The “Other” Desert Blood

In 2001, when I began working on my book, I gave a lot of thought to what its title should be.  After doing some snooping around on the Internet, I settled on a name that no one else was using and incorporated it into my story.  I called it Desert Blood.

Imagine my surprise when, after selling the book to Simon & Schuster in January 2005,
I learned that author Alicia Gaspar de Alba had chosen the exact same title for her new mystery novel!  Luckily, my editor decided to tweak my title just a bit anyway, renaming it Desert Blood 10pm/9c.

I have met Alicia a couple of times now, and we get a kick out of the coincidence.  The Collective Consciousness of the Universe hard at work...

Be sure to stop by Alicia’s site at
www.desertblood.info for more details about her book!
